Does Time Exist ? by Trenia Logan

Does time really exist ? It must right ? I ’ m not convinced of this . I ’ ve always been fascinated with the idea that time is a concept that is completely unreal . Nature doesn ’ t work via a clock . Life in general doesn ’ t work via a clock . There are cycles , rhythms and seasons but no clocks . In San Miguel de Allende , you ’ ll not see a clock tower . You ’ ll know the time when you listen for the church bells from la Parroquia in the town square or when you hear the roosters crowing . Many times while in San Miguel , I ’ ve had to stop and count the chimes of the bell to figure out what time it is because it ’ s just not important . Siestas to escape the afternoon heat have a way of stretching time .
Invited to a party at 6 ? Wait for the 6 chimes of the bell and then start getting ready . When I first came to San Miguel in 1996 , I didn ’ t understand this concept . I vividly remember waiting and waiting some more when we were traveling on day trips during my exchange student visit . It didn ’ t really bother me but many of my US counterparts were a bit upset . It wasn ’ t until recent years that I began to understand the Mexican concept of time . My adopted sister Paulina and I often joke about being on Mexican time versus American time . The US motto of “ Time is Money ” simply doesn ’ t apply in this part of Mexico . Relationships are money . Relationships are more important than showing up at 6 on the dot . In business and in personal endeavors , I ’ ve learned to take the time to really get to know the person , their family , and their lives before jumping into business or serious discussions . San Miguel and LifeGrid continue to teach me that time is not as important as relationships .
My oldest daughter has zero concept of time . She moves at her own speed always . I ’ ve lovingly given her the nickname of Molasses . As I sat in the car line in front of her school this morning , trying anxiously to get her to eat her toast just a little faster , I thought about this topic of time . What was more important in that moment - pushing her to eat it faster so that I could get the baby dropped off and gets myself to work faster or savoring those moments before we parted ways , watching her enjoy her toast in what seemed like slow-motion ? I opted for the latter . I chose peace and calm over yelling , crying and rushing . We were both better for it . I ’ d like to think this is part of the effect San Miguel has had on both of us – slow down , choose peace , calm and love . Time doesn ’ t exist in our hearts . It is extremely liberating to function from the heart where time doesn ’ t exist .
