“ Get Curious With Your Life ”

wE ’ RE ALL BORN AS A UNIQUE individual and then life gets in our way . From the time we first crawl , we are taught that the people around us will show us what is right and wrong , good and bad , appropriate and inappropriate in our lives . We are taught that all our answers are found outside

ourselves and that the feedback from others will always dictate to us whether we have strayed outside our boundaries .
Living like this means that we have to switch off – or hide – most , if not all , of the unique parts of ourselves . We become conditioned to living on auto-pilot . We act , react , and behave without thinking . We even think without actually thinking . And we end up going through every day living someone else ’ s version of our lives .
How do I know this ? I lived like this until I collapsed and couldn ’ t get back up . I pushed myself to extremes trying to make everyone around me happy , trying to perfect being good , appropriate and right . I demanded so much of myself that eventually there was nothing left to give .
When you ’ re suddenly faced with nothing but time to look at yourself , life becomes extraordinarily daunting . When you ’ ve spent your whole life avoiding the need to review the way you live – and ignoring the warning signs that you need to take notice of – it ’ s terrifying to suddenly be the only thing in your focus .
When you ’ re on the floor , in a million pieces and unable to stop crying – and with no idea where to turn – it is extremely hard to work out how to get back up .
There were two big lessons I learned during my two year recovery . The first is that living this way is completely unnecessary . The second lesson was that living differently is no more difficult than learning to get curious with your life .
In our formative years we are taught very early on that curiosity and creativity are two characteristics that won ’ t always serve us as we get older . In fact , our conditioning teaches us that they are undesirable .
