New Zealand oceanographer Laurent Lebreton suggested in two studies published
by the scientific journal Nature in 2017 and 2019 that rivers, especially the largest
and most polluted, are decisive in the arrival of plastic in the sea when it is carried,
according to estimates, between 1, 1 and 2.4 million tons in a year.
