50 Years of Adventure: Scouts Canada operates Alberta Summer Camps Program Geared to Keep Youth Active Camp Impeesa celebrates 50 years of offering Alberta summer camps in the Rocky Mountains and continues co-ed adventure programs for both Scouts and non-Scouts. LETHBRIDGE, AB – When Robert Baden-Powell started the Scouting movement in 1907, there were no smart- phones, computer games or other distractions for youth, and their parents, to contend with. Instead, children were led to the great outdoors to experience the three principles, which Baden-Powell called the 3 H’s: Happy, healthy, and helpful. That same way of thinking is applied today with the start of the season for Alberta sum- mer camps, and especially at the Scouts Canada premiere adventure summer camp, Camp Impeesa. Celebrating its 50th anniver- sary this July, Camp Impeesa, which is nested in the Rocky Mountains, welcomes all youth, both male and female Campers Wanted! Scouts and non-Scouts, ages eight to 17, to be active, make new friends, and to enjoy a summer they will never forget. “We acquired the camp in 1967 as part of a Centennial project. It’s set around a rustic high adventure camp. Our mo- tive is really about getting kids outside and being active,” said Pascal Seguin, Youth Council Commissioner with Scouts Canada’s Chinook Council. Situated south of the Crows- nest Highway, off the shores of Beaver Mines Lake looking up to Table Mountain, Camp Im- peesa runs weeklong overnight camps that emphasize the outdoors. The numerous activ- ities and facilities make it one of the top adventure summer camps within driving distance of Calgary, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat. “We use the mountain and lake as part of our program- ming,” said Seguin. “We now have updated facilities for our summer programs, but our campers still stay in ‘glamp- ing’ tents and sleep outside. We try to make it as much of an outdoors experience as possible… I like to think of it as that camp from the film The Parent Trap, but more rustic and spread out amongst the mountainous scenery.” Fully renovated and expand- ed in 2016, Camp Impeesa now features a new washroom and shower facility that has 10 individual rooms with a show- er, toilet and sink, so campers have more privacy. Along with old camp activity favour- ites, such as canoeing, hiking, campfires and swimming, what makes Camp Impeesa truly unique are high adventure activities such as the 40-foot rock climbing tower, ziplines, water trampoline, 3D archery and tomahawk throwing. This year, Camp Impees has added more weeks to its programming from July 9 to August 25. For those looking for an ad- venture on horseback, Camp Impeesa is holding its Timber Trails Horse Camp August 6-11 for ages 12 and up. “Our long-term goal is to of- fer as many activities outdoors as possible to help children discover something they love. New skills and new friends are a bonus!” Bus transportation is available for a small fee, healthy hot meals are included, and nightly group campfires are held under the stars.
