SPRING 2016 mdlsr.ca Team Alberta Arctic Winter Games The MD wishes to congratulate Carlee Dick, Zaphira Ey, Eriana Bura and Dakota Goulet for their representation of Team Alberta in the 24th annual Arctic Winter games. These four local youths were selected to compete against the best athletes from across the circumpolar region. They flew to Nuuk, Greenland on March 4th, where Carlee Dick and Zaphira Ey of Assineau competed in the snowshoe category, and Eriana Bura and Dakota Goulet, both from Widewater, represented our region in the wrestling category. Share in their adventure online at facebook.com/TeamAB. The Arctic Winter Games is an international sport festival bringing together athletes from Alaska, Greenland, Sampi (the indigenous people of Norway, Sweden and Finland), Northwest Territories, Northern Alberta, Nunavut, Nunavik (Northern Quebec), Yamal (Russia) and Yukon. During the 1967 Canada Winter Games, representatives of the Yukon and Northwest Territories found their teams at a disadvantage due to relatively small athletic pools, lack of facilities and infrequent training opportunities. The concept of an event specifically designed for northern athletes was born. Initially staged in Yellowknife, these games have occurred every two years since 1970.
