Gateway Signage Program
For decades, the roadside signs that dot the region’s highways have welcomed residents and wayfarers alike to and from
the area. After several years of planning and development, the MD has begun to replace these faded cedar gateway
markers with vibrant new signs that sport the official Lesser Slave River logo. The replacement of these gateway signs
represents the first step in deploying a comprehensive signage and wayfinding system for the Lesser Slave River region.
This project, which is in the first phase, is designed to promote the Lesser Slave River brand while helping direct, inform
and inspire travellers. “There are a few key reasons why I feel the gateway signage program is so important,” commented
Reeve Murray Kerik. “Number one, it is a big, bold visual representation of our sense of place and community pride. The
old signs have served us well, but they’ve been faded and worn for years now. Plus, the updated MD logo has been in
play for about five years. Our signage and architectural details throughout the region need to reflect this change.”
The MD, with the help of consultants, has been undergoing a strategic design process for the new signs. The next
phases of the signage program will begin to address park and trail signage, community wayfinding markers and building
signage. “Landmarks are a way of people finding their way through the landscape,” continued Reeve Kerik. If we can
impart our own ‘rugged-and-real’ aesthetic and captivating landmarks throughout the community to draw people in,
that can only be a good thing.”
