Lesser Slave River Community Guide Fall 2016 | Page 7

FALL 2016 mdlsr.ca Reeve Kerik further mused how this new facility represented a significant milestone in the region’s recovery. “On an occasion as special as this, I can’t help but reflect. I look back at the journey we all began exactly five years ago…and I marvel at how far we’ve grown. More than anything, the Legacy Centre is a testament to this growth. It is a story of our collective strength. It is a reminder that when we work together we can achieve some amazing things.” A FireSmart display is built into the front foyer of the Interpretive Centre. It provides an engaging, museum-like retrospective of the wildfires of May 2011, combined with wildfire facts and helpful tips on FireSmart procedures to help safeguard residents and the communities in which they live. “My hope is that this special place will inspire everyone who walks through its doors,” added Reeve Kerik. I am confident that it will be a place of joy, of celebration, and of quiet reflection for generations to come.” In commemoration of the fifth anniversary of the devastating wildfires, the MD, the Town, the Sawridge, and the FireSmart Committee worked together to create a video highlighting the considerable achievements of the Lesser Slave Region since the event. The goal was to recognize and celebrate the collective achievements of the FireSmart Committee, the MD of Lesser Slave River, the Town of Slave Lake, and the Sawridge First Nation.
