Some of you may have
heard of the oddly
named game called
pickleball and wondered
what type of game it is.
Pickleball is a game that
is similar to tennis in
which players use short-
handed bats to hit a
perforated plas c ball
over a net. Pickleball is a
racquet sport that com-
bines the elements of
tennis, badminton, and
table tennis. The game
allows two, three, and
even four players to use
solid paddles to hit a ball
which is quite similar to a
whiffle ball, over a net.
One warm summer a er-
noon in 1965, Congress-
man Joel Pritchard, Bar-
ney McCallum, and Bill
Bell had invented the
game in the small town
of Bainbridge Island, WA.
The reasoning to the one
-of-a-kind name of the
game is that the
Pritchard family had a
cocker spaniel named
Pickles, who was very
fond of the game. When-
ever the ball came near
Pickles, he would take
the ball and run away.
A pickleball court is approxi-
mately 20x44 feet. The
height of the net is 36 inches
at the sidelines and 34 inches
in the middle. The rules of
pickleball are excep onally
simple. Points can be scored
by the serving side only and
can only occur when the op-
ponent fails to return the ball
or hits the ball out of bounds.
The servers will con nue to
serve while also alterna ng
service courts un l the serv-
ing side faults. The first side
to score 11 points while
simultaneously being in the
lead of at least a 2-point
margin wins.
Pickleball has come a long
way and this sport is s ll
gaining more popularity as
the days go by. Several of
our communi es have pickle-
ball courts and many resi-
dents enjoy playing and even
entering tournaments to
show off their skills. The
Leland Games take place
each March and this year
Kings Ridge was proud to
host the pickleball event for
all 8 par cipa ng
communi es.
