What began as Negro History Week
established by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in
February 1926, evolved into Black History
Month and was officially recognized
na�onally in 1976, when President Gerald
Ford emboldened our na�on to honor the
contribu�ons and achievements of black
Americans in every area of endeavor.
The story of the Rev. Dr. Mar�n Luther

Reflec�ng on the many contribu�ons
of Blacks in our society, I am wri�ng on
the eve of the Rev. Dr. Mar�n Luther King,
Jr.’s birthday. As a public servant
represen�ng a very diverse group of
people, today I can’t help but think about
the residents of Miami-Dade County’s
urban core.
