Spring 2018 Lead Like a Kid: Principles to Becoming a Successful Leader By: Char-Michelle McDowell Kids! They are cute and adorable, but raising them can be a challenge. Take a moment and think about the time when you were a kid.  Do you recall your parents, or teachers saying such phrases as these? "Don't color outside the lines." "Use the ruler to make a straight line please." "Don't jump off that bed again!" "Don't you dare move off this porch!"  Ensuring a child's safety and success is pertinent, but leaders can learn something from these childhood phrases.  Looking from a different perspective, all leaders, inspiring leaders, and entrepreneurs can learn something from these sayings, as they have hidden principles within them. Principle #1: Dream beyond the lines Lines are simply boundaries.  They represent the limitations leaders put on themselves, or allow others to put on them.  But this is the year for you to dream beyond every limitation, flaw, and handicap to see your vision and dreams realized.  Principle #2: Employ excellence and dismiss perfectionism Leadership is not always used with a ruler because there is more than one way to lead.  Employing excellence keeps you focused on why you do what you do, ensuring successful results.  Perfectionism keeps a critical eye open, breeding feelings of not being good enough, and forcing you to achieve unrealistic outcomes.   Principle #3: Silence fear and jump anyway Fear is like a shadow always following you.  Disarm its purpose and jump by leading the life you were designed to lead. Principle #4: Believe in yourself and get out of your comfort zone Transformational leaders sacrifice and resist being comfortable, to gain success.  Believe in the leader within and soar outside your comfort zone. Employ these principles today and allow the kid in you, to lead and transform the world. The Writers Corner: About Char-Michelle McDowell Char-Michelle McDowel is the owner of The B.R.A.G.
