SPRING 2018 Let Your Heart Lead You By: Rev. Evita L. Smith, M.Div., MSOL Society molds us to do things for reasons outside of true purpose or passion.  One can become good at something because the skill is developed to do the task.  However, what separates the good from the great is the heart that fuels the individual.  Heart (purpose) makes up for the limits of skill. Theologian Howard Thurman states “Don’t ask what the world needs.  Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.  Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” When we move away from the limitations of others’ expectations of what we should do, we make room to hear the calling of our heart.  When we commit to the mission of discovering our passion and purpose, we become open to becoming the best version of ourselves and who God created us to be to serve the world. Too many people are living frustrated and burned out lives because they have settled for a job or a role in which they do not feel purposed to perform.  If we are going to have successful organizations that meet a need effectively, it starts with leaders who lead from their passion and their purpose.  A leader who is fulfilled in themselves is contagious.  They can translate and transfer that purpose and energy into those within the organization.    To allow the heart to lead means we allow purpose and passion to fuel the way we lead.  It begins with each of us coming into an awareness of who we are at the core of our being and allowing this knowing to cultivate how we serve and lead.  When we do this, we move beyond being productive for payment or position, but we lead and serve from a place of purpose.  Take the challenge to allow your heart to lead.
