teacher and seeing that all students can learn, given the appropriate
resources, time and necessary feedback.

these students were born in the U.S.,
and have been in school continuously
since kindergarten. Now, as sophomores
in high school, with def icits in literary
skills and years of failing courses, they
lack the motivation to even try. Nevertheless, some of these students aspire to
go on to college.
T he pred icament of these Engl ish
learners is what moved teachers to entreat administrators and the AVID coordinator to pilot a class that would build
the literacy skills these students require,
and in the process, help them develop
positive attitudes toward themselves and
their educatio
