DON’T BE THAT PARENT Getting kicked out of the game does not mean you’re a supportive parent. It means you’re undisciplined, lack mental restriction and are setting a poor example. What have you gained with these theatrics? There’s a fine line between cheering, celebrating and being a true advocate for your child versus losing your temper to the extent where you’re laying hands on and threatening adults and children. Remember, some of the umpires are teens. It is NEVER a good look when an adult is being escorted from the field because they cannot control their feelings and emotions. Coaches are aware of who the unruly parents are and really don’t want them nor their child to be involved because one unruly parent who is a victim of their own unbridled passion and reckless disregard for order can literally destroy it for everyone. And they usually do. Ultimately, what this type of behavior is really about is attention. The offending adult usually relishes in the type of negative behavior they are creating by making a scene. These same parents wear their outrageous behavior like a badge of honor, and then, as if that’s not enough, share stories about their bad behavior with others. This level of toxicity could transfer onto their child, made manifest through their bullying behavior. Bullies are often times the children of overly oppressive, psychologically damaged adults who seldom exercise empathy or compassion. As a result some of these children may become bullies themselves. 23
