Would you stay
By William Walter
“You didn’t get any orange juice?”
“Well, no. I was teaching today, sweetheart. How was
your interview?”
“What about Dad? Couldn’t he have got some?”
“He’s very busy.”
“Of course he is.”
“Please don’t be like that. You know he works hard.”
“Okay. Okay. He works hard. When are we getting
more juice?”
“Maybe you can take my car and get some? The
doctors said you can drive the day after your treatments.”
“I don’t have any money.”
“I could give you a little bit for the juice. You’ll be
working soon, right? You went to the interview and did
okay?”
“I did fine.”
“What sort of questions did they ask you?”
“It was an interview like the others back in high
school. When you’re applying to bag groceries, there aren’t
many questions.”
“Wait. I thought the interview was for Home Depot?”
“Sorry. I got confused.”
“You got confused?”
“That’s what I said.”
“Please tell me the truth.”
“I went. It was for Home Depot, like you said.”
