War
By Briseida Esparza
War
confronted him with everything he thought he outran.
She picked him up, threw him over her shoulder,
and began to walk.
He kicked and screamed
in denial of the forced abandonment of his manhood.
War was unlike anything he had ever fought;
such a tremble in her embrace.
So strong in her grip,
she held him and hushed his childlike sobs
as he watched his life
inch further and further away from him.
