You slide the papers across the table towards me with
a faint smile. Just sign here. So simple. A flick of the wrist,
the final brushstroke of an artist’s work. Our masterpiece,
a culmination. It’s for the best, you say. We can still try.
But I don’t say it aloud. You give me that smile again and
turn away. I’m having trouble moving. You stare out the
window. It’s a lovely day.
