Roberta: What’s that you say? Ramona: I just want to go to the dance. Can I please go? Please? (Ramona pleads) William: We need to meet him first. Ramona smiles and just as quickly as she does, it leaves. Roberta: Now wait a minute! Honey, did you just hear what she said? She said she wants to go to a dance. Do you know what goes on at those dances? Hormonal teens get together and start gyrating on the dance floor. They’ll be on the floor dancing to that slow, lustful, devil music and get to looking into each other’s eyes and the next thing we know, Ramona’s got a bump in her rump and swelling in her belly! Ramona, you said this boy is in the book club? Does he know the Word of God? Ramona: Ma! Ewww! And I don’t know . . . I’m sure he does. William: Let’s meet him first and we’ll decide from there. Call him and tell him that we want him to come over with his parents tomorrow evening. Ramona: (with her eyes lighting up) Oh, Daddy, you’re the best! I love you, I love you, I love you! (Ramona hugs and kisses her dad on the cheek, grabs her books off the table and runs upstairs to call Zach.) Ramona grabs the cordless phone on her way to her bedroom. She throws her books on the bed. Ramona lies across her bed and dials Zach’s number. The phone rings three times before Zach picks up. Zach: Hello? Ramona: Hello, may I speak to Zach? (Ramona asks, pretending not to recognize the voice) Zach: It’s me . . . what up? Ramona (giggling): Hey, what you doing? Zach: Nothing. What’s up with you Lil’ Momma? Ramona (giggling): Nothing. Silence Zach: Soo . . . . Ramona: Sooo . . . I asked my parents about going to the dance and my dad said that he wanted to meet you and your parents first. Can you come over tomorrow evening? Zach: I don’t know about that Lil’ Momma. Your dad is a pastor and your mom is a minister. I don’t know. Ramona: Aw . . . please, my dad really wants to meet you. Look, if you don’t, they won’t let me go to the dance. Zach: Ai-ight then. Ramona: You’re so sweet, you know, you’ve been on my mind all day. 80
