Church Girl: First (Date About a Boy) Tracie Nicole Williams Characters: Mother (Roberta) Father (William) Ramona Boy (Zachariah aka Zach) Katrina (Zach’s mother) Act I Plot: Ramona is asked to go to Jack High homecoming dance by Zachariah. She really wants to go. She tries to come up with a way to approach the subject with her parents. Mother (singing): I’m so glad that the Lord saved me. (Sings background) Saved me. I’m so glad that the Lord saved me. (Sings background) Saved me. If it had not been for Jesus, where would I be, I’m so glad that the Lord saved me. Roberta is in the kitchen preparing dinner for the night and waiting for Ramona to come home from school. It is Ramona’s sophomore year. After cheerleading tryouts her freshman year, things are beginning to look up. Ramona walks through the door and makes her way into the kitchen. She is smiling and Roberta looks at her as if she is up to something. Ramona: Hey Ma, what’s for dinner? (Ramona places her books on the kitchen table and heads to the sink to wash her hands so she can help her mother prepare dinner.) Roberta: Baked chicken, mustard greens, macaroni and cheese and peach cobbler for dessert. What are you smiling about? Ramona: Nothing, just smiling, that’s all. (Ramona says with an even wider grin.) Roberta: Okay, come out with it. What do you want to ask me? Ramona: Nothing Mom, I’m just smiling. Can’t a girl smile? Roberta: Okay, who’s the boy? (Roberta recognizes that ‘dazed, I’m in love with a boy look.’ It is the same look she had at Roberta’s age.) Ramona: Ma, how do you know it’s a boy? Can’t a girl just be happy? Roberta: What’s his name? (Roberta stops chopping the onions, wipes her hands on her apron and rests her hands on her hips while leaning against the counter.) Ramona: Okay, Mom, before you fly off the handle, let me tell you about him. He’s really nice. He’s on the basketball team and in the book club. He . . . Roberta: What’s his name and is he saved? 78
