Dear Reader,
It is once again our unique pleasure to present to you the Fall 2014 issue of Laurels.
For this issue, we find our inspiration in the waning of the nineteenth century and the
rise of the Art Nouveau movement. We have melded this aesthetic of flowing lines, floral
motifs, and female forms with a medium that would gain popularity just as Art Nouveau’s
would slide: collage. Collage as an art form was born in the early twentieth century but
can trace its roots back a thousand years.
It is the nature of art and ideas to wane over time only to wax later under a new
name or ideal. In this way they are like the passing of the seasons. And just as no two summers are ever quite the same, these ideas return to us slightly different, slightly altered. In
this vein, we present our title, Till the Summer Comes Again, taken from Lewis Carroll’s
Through the Looking-Glass. It is our hope that you enjoy the stellar work within this magazine as much as we enjoyed putting it together. We offer it as a meagre reminder that no
matter how bleak the winter, summer always comes again.
I would like to give a big thank you, first and foremost, to everyone who submitted
their work. It was a joy and privilege to read what you have labored so hard to put on the
page. Thank you to our beloved faculty advisor Dr. Lowery for her patience, trust, and
faith that this magazine will get done along with our editorial board: Dr. Clinton Brand,
Dr. Shannon Forbes, and Fr. Romanus Muoneke. Thank you to Gabriella Flournoy and
Quang Vo whose gorgeous, hand crafted artwork graces these pages. Finally, I would like
to thank the staff for all the time and dedication they put into completing this issue. This
magazine is not possible without your efforts. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know
you personally and professionally over the course of this semester.
Sincerely,
Sean Guillemette
