+Book Review: Tim Murphey Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression and the Unexpected Solutions - Hari, 2018 This recent book (2018), on the best seller list in several countries, is Johann Hari's second investigative journalism book Lost Connections: Uncovering the real causes of depression and the unexpected solutions (2018 London: Bloomsbury). Similar to his first best seller book in 2015 (Chasing the Scream: The first and last days of the war on drugs), he travels the world hunting for confirmed research showing that it is not the imbalance of hormones in our brain that causes depression, but that it is mainly the loss of social connections in our lives that causes neuro-chemical imbalances that lead to depression and anxiety, which have in turn created to the multi-billion-dollar pharmaceutical industry. Hari does not just complain about depression and its treatments but he shows a lot of hard data from multiple researchers that can help us. He also goes in depth to describe “Nine Causes of Depression and Anxiety” in Part II: lost connections, childhood trauma, lack of meaningful values, status and respect, contact with the natural world, hope for the future, and yes, to an extent, the mal-functions of our genes and brain changes.
