Oakley Landscapes Ltd text Oakley Landscapes Ltd and we then laid Park Pave plastic trays and filled them with gravel. This is to allow the water to run through into the ground and avoid flooding. There are of course many different coloured types of gravel on the market which create all sorts of options to fit different settings harmoniously. The new paving was artfully spaced such that the wheels of the cars can easily avoid running over and crushing the plants. The sidewall was removed and a Viburnum tinus hedge planted in its place. As there was little room for plants a trellis was fitted to the wall of the house and along the neighbour’s boundary wall for plants to grow up it. Any spare space at the base of the house and around the edge was planted. The base of house wall and the side boundary were very dry so plants that can cope with those conditions were selected. With advice from the RHS low growing plants that would survive under a car were planted. Wherever we could position plants, we did so, without ever looking over-stuffed or excessive. photo Oakley Landscapes Ltd The RHS wants to show how easy it is to create a low maintenance drive that looks good with plants where you’re still able to park two cars. We were all delighted with the results, reflecting to ourselves how much more attractive and more pleasant it now looks compared to the original, banal, block paving drive. And above all, all those plants do their bit to help offset air pollution and other ecological damage to the wider environment. www.oakleylandscapes.co.uk Landscape & Urban Design 63
