MASTERPLAN WINS
‘LIVING WATERWAYS
AWARD’
Landscape architecture firm
LUC has won a Living Waterways
Award for its Woodside, Firhill
& Hamiltonhill Development
Framework project in Glasgow.
According to the group the
project outlines the “significant
potential” of the Glasgow
canal as a connector between
disadvantaged communities,
to invigorate underutilised
greenspace and to encourage and
promote activity, wellbeing and
health.
A statement by LUC said:
“The project encompasses
the establishment of a Vision,
Development Framework and
masterplan for the canal corridor
between Applecross and Firhill
Basins, supported by extensive
community participation.”
The awards are organised by
the Canal & River Trust and the
project was recognised in the
‘Engaging The Community –
Large Scale’ category.
LDA Design has been named the
winner of an international design
competition to design a new urban
block in Kaliningrad, Russia.
LDA Design’s urban design team
overcame stiff challenges from four
other finalists: Studio Paola Viganò
from Milan; Devillers et Associés from
Paris, and Stockholm’s Mandaworks
and Tovatt Architects and Planners,
to scoop the top prize. Twenty-eight
companies from 12 countries submitted
entries.
The competition aimed for the whole
of Kaliningrad to benefit from the
design of Oktyabrsky Island. A short
10-minute walk from the city centre,
Oktyabrsky Island is home to the 2018
World Cup, 35,000-seater Kaliningrad
Stadium. Comprising 385 hectares
of reclaimed marshland, it has been
designated a special economic zone
by the Russian government, to attract
international investment and tourism.
LDA Design worked closely with
Russian architects MAP and global
engineering firm WSP to develop a
new urban oasis embedded within the
wider city, creating a welcoming and
enterprising place to live and work and
delivering against LDA Design’s ‘first
life’ approach.
The project encompasses the establishment
of a Vision, Development Framework and
masterplan for the canal corridor between
Applecross and Firhill Basins, supported by
extensive community participation.”
