MONTH IN REVIEW AWARDS LDA DESIGN WINS KALININGRAD INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION MASTERPLANS LUC’S GLASGOW CANAL MASTERPLAN WINS ‘LIVING WATERWAYS AWARD’ Landscape architecture firm LUC has won a Living Waterways Award for its Woodside, Firhill & Hamiltonhill Development Framework project in Glasgow. According to the group the project outlines the “significant potential” of the Glasgow canal as a connector between disadvantaged communities, to invigorate underutilised greenspace and to encourage and promote activity, wellbeing and health. A statement by LUC said: “The project encompasses the establishment of a Vision, Development Framework and masterplan for the canal corridor between Applecross and Firhill Basins, supported by extensive community participation.” The awards are organised by the Canal & River Trust and the project was recognised in the ‘Engaging The Community – Large Scale’ category. LDA Design has been named the winner of an international design competition to design a new urban block in Kaliningrad, Russia. LDA Design’s urban design team overcame stiff challenges from four other finalists: Studio Paola Viganò from Milan; Devillers et Associés from Paris, and Stockholm’s Mandaworks and Tovatt Architects and Planners, to scoop the top prize. Twenty-eight companies from 12 countries submitted entries. The competition aimed for the whole of Kaliningrad to benefit from the design of Oktyabrsky Island. A short 10-minute walk from the city centre, Oktyabrsky Island is home to the 2018 World Cup, 35,000-seater Kaliningrad Stadium. Comprising 385 hectares of reclaimed marshland, it has been designated a special economic zone by the Russian government, to attract international investment and tourism. LDA Design worked closely with Russian architects MAP and global engineering firm WSP to develop a new urban oasis embedded within the wider city, creating a welcoming and enterprising place to live and work and delivering against LDA Design’s ‘first life’ approach. The project encompasses the establishment of a Vision, Development Framework and masterplan for the canal corridor between Applecross and Firhill Basins, supported by extensive community participation.” In numbers 28 That’s how many companies entered the Kaliningrad International Design Competition ACQUISITION IDVERDE ACQUIRES LANDSCAPING FIRM OUT THERE SERVICES Idverde has acquired Northern Ireland-based landscaping and grounds maintenance firm Out There Services.
