23 SPRING 2016 Taungurung people, treated us to an extraordinary presentation which focussed on the Birrarung Wilam Commemorative Place, part of a walkway which connects the downtown Melbourne CBD with Melbourne’s sports and entertainment hub which includes the Melbourne Cricket Ground. In their work they had collaborated with other artists and created a superb large scale installation commemorating campfire sites beside the Birrarung (Yarra) River. My own presentation on behalf of Te Tau-a-Nuku (the Māori Landscape Architect’s Rōpu ) followed in which I provided some insight into how we, in collaboration with the NZILA, have gone about advocating in relation to Maori Cultural Landscape in Aotearoa - New Zealand. Jefa Greenaway, an awardwinning Aboriginal Architect and Interior Designer, Director of Greenaway Architects and Chair of IADV, provided further examples of the use of traditional elements and narratives in his work. Together with Reuben Berg, he has put together an impressive body of work and they are now concentrating their efforts on advocacy and increasing awareness and opportunities for others practising ABOVE: Mandy Nicholson, an Aboriginal artist, took the group though Birrarung Wilam Commemorative Place walkway.
