Rogue landlords face tougher
regulations from next month
L andlords who fail to respond adequately to repair
requests may lose eviction rights.
Rogue landlords will no longer be
able to carry out ‘revenge evictions’
of tenants who complain about the
state of their property from the
beginning of next month, a leading
housing barrister has warned.
Naveen Agnihotri said that tenants
would no longer be faced with a
decision on whether to complain about
substandard accommodation that
could put them and their families in
danger for fear of being evicted.
Around 200,000 tenants face this
type of ‘revenge eviction’ every year,
according to research by housing and
homelessness charity Shelter – but
that will be outlawed when relevant
provisions of the Deregulation Act 2015
comes into force on 1 October.
