Rogue landlords will no longer be able to carry out ‘revenge evictions’ of tenants who complain about the state of their property from the beginning of next month, a leading housing barrister has warned. Naveen Agnihotri said that tenants would no longer be faced with a decision on whether to complain about substandard accommodation that could put them and their families in danger for fear of being evicted. Around 200,000 tenants face this type of ‘revenge eviction’ every year, according to research by housing and homelessness charity Shelter – but that will be outlawed when relevant provisions of the Deregulation Act 2015 comes into force on 1 October.
