As we passed I noticed this little blue car parked on the side of the road. The driver and
passenger were sitting on the barrier watching the fire and as we passed I said to Anton
that I was sure it was Lanel and Marvin Beukes from The Psychedelic Theatre group.”
A few months later Anton and Claire got involved with the Winter Wonderland Festival
in Gordons Bay. They posted messages to a few groups, inviting other performers to join
them. The only group that responded was Lanel and the Psychedelic Theatre. “That, says
Claire, “was the beginning of an exciting friendship and a magical performing adventure
with our new extended family.”
The rest of the Van Der Vyver’s supporting cast is Anton and Claire son Liam (9) and Claire’s
mom Hazel Sayer. According to Claire Liam loves being in the limelight and took part in the
fire theatre productions of Midsummer Night Dream in Fire with the Psychedelic Theatre
at the Taal Monument in Paarl last December.
When asked if steampunk has become a lifestyle choice for them, Claire explains that it
is not easy. “Like everyone else we still have to plug into the day-job matrix, but it still
whispers to our kooky inner inventor and scintillates the secret swashbuckler in us.
