Lake Forest Parks & Recreation Brochures Winter & Spring 2019 | Page 6

From the Park Bench Get Outdoors! Winter!!! Get outdoors and build a snowman, ice skate at West Park, or try out our snow shoe rentals while enjoying the trails at Deerpath Golf Course. Grasp those unexpected nice spring days, and go for a walk or a bicycle ride. Don’t let the weather keep you inside! Research has shown that connecting with the outdoors is vital to your health. The staff has planned some fun winter and spring activities for your participation. In addition to our wonderful program offerings, look for events such as GO Lake Forest, the Daddy-Daughter Winter Ball, the Dodgeball Winter Classic, Reptile Rampage, the Lake Forest Dance Academy Company Benefit, Camp Preview Day, Easter Eggstravaganza, and many other events to keep your family busy. Sally Swarthout Director of Parks, Recreation, & Forestry Over the course of the season, staff will be working on the masterplan for Open Lands Park which will include a contest to rename the park. We will also be working closely with the Public Works Department on the North Beach Access Road and Bluff Repair that will begin in late winter. Please see page 69 for more information. Winter will also provide the opportunity for staff to develop an efficient beach operation plan for the summer of 2019. Information will be released as that season grows closer. In the Fall Brochure, we introduced the “Chart Our Future“ initiative. In collaboration with the Friends of Lake Forest Parks and Recreation Foundation, the City of Lake Forest has begun a ten year Comprehensive Park Master Plan. At the time of printing, the project team has completed the resident survey, held stakeholder meetings, and participated in workshops with the Park and Recreation Board to determine where we succeed, what we may be missing, and areas that may need additional attention and support. The final draft of the plan will be delivered to the Park and Recreation Board and the Friends of Parks and Recreation Foundation in early December. This plan will give the Park, Forestry, and Recreation Department and The Friends of Lake Forest Parks and Recreation Foundation the direction needed to plan for future projects and fundraising opportunities. The Deerpath Golf Course Renovation Project continues to move forward. The new cart paths provided great enjoyment for those that used them and the Halfway House has broken ground. We are looking forward to the ability to stop for a quick break when we are out between holes 6 and 12. The Fundraising Committee and the Friends of Lake Forest Parks and Recreation Foundation are working hard to raise money for the additional amenities at the course. These include a new indoor cart barn, cart fleet, and a golf learning center. Donations can be made at the Recreation center or online at FriendsLFPR.org or deerpathgolf.com.
