From the Park Bench Get Outdoors! Dreaming of summer….on a brutally cold and snowy day! Thoughts of day camps, golf tournaments, beach-going, concerts, Festival and Fireworks, and summer fun fill my head. If you want to get in the mood for summer, our Camp Guide Insert is the place to start! Our camps have always been a community favorite and we take pride in our dedicated staff and all of our exciting offerings. New this year we are offering half-day options for All Stars Camps from 9am to 12pm - which is a great way to keep your afternoons free for family fun at the beach, playing in the parks, or just enjoying the lazy days of summer. Sally Swarthout Director of Parks, Recreation, & Forestry Concerts in the Square are back this year with a fantastic line-up of talent to fill our Thursday evenings with music, picnics, and family relaxation. We will also be offering two concerts at the beach this summer located on the lawn just south of the North Pavilion. Last year’s experiment turned out to be a great time had by all! The Friends of Lake Forest Parks and Recreation Foundation will host the annual Fred Jackson Golf Tournament on Friday, June 7th. This fundraiser supports recreation programming and services and Deerpath Golf Course. Last November, at the Tree Lighting Ceremony, the Friends Foundation presented a check for $25,000 to the Deerpath Golf Course Fundraising Committee. These dollars are earmarked for the Deerpath Golf Course Renovation Project, which has completed the renovation of the clubhouse, drainage, added continuous cart paths, and a soon to be opened Halfway House between holes 6 and 12, and the work is not done yet! The Festival and Fireworks Celebration held on July 4th at Deerpath Park is the Friends of Lake Forest Parks and Recreation Foundation’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Come join us for a night celebrating our country, enjoying family and friends while listening to great music and seeing a spectacular fireworks display. You may have heard that our north access road to the beach and the bluff area adjacent are undergoing restructuring. This work begins in Spring 2019 and is expected to be completed by mid-August. At the time of print, the plans for access to the lakefront beach area are being investigated by staff. Please look for the details of the plan in the Dialogue, on our web page, Facebook and through our Constant Contact emails. We thank you for your patience as we work to bring you a more stable bluff and a better road configuration. Now for a hammock and a good book…I can hear the calypso music now… PARKS & RECREATION BOARD Not Pictured: Rich Adams Nancy Duffy William Zordani, Student Charles Kohlmeyer Chairperson Paul Best Shannon Maguire Steve Reimer Melanie Walsh MEETINGS: All meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm.* The public is welcome to attend. *Occasionally, meetings have to be rescheduled.
