Games and practices will be held in both communities. Players will be from both communities. PROGRAM FORMAT House League Basketball will feature different levels of competition as kids get older. Beginning with the most basic of fundamentals at the Kindergarten level and climaxing at 7th - 8th Grade with high-level competition. While competition escalates through the years, FUN and skill development is at the foundation at all levels. All levels will feature several practices before games are played, with the goal of skill development at the forefront. Playoff tournaments will be featured at 5th Grade and above to help provide more competition. GOALS OF YOUTH BASKETBALL The purpose of Lake Forest Recreation Department’s Youth Basketball Program is to provide young people with a safe and enjoyable athletic experience with an emphasis on sportsmanship, fair play, and skill development. All participants will be instructed in the fundamental skills of the sport including positioning, rules, and basic strategy. Fundamental playing rules will be taught and enforced at a rate that is suitable to each age level. All players will be assured of playing at least 50% of each game and the opportunity to play every position with regular practice attendance. Competition level increases as players get older. PRACTICE = PLAY! TEAM FORMATION During the first week of the program, Recreation Department staff and coaches will evaluate all the participants during regular play, drills, and scrimmages. After the first week, staff will conduct a live draft with their coaches. The staff will make sure teams are balanced according to skill level and grade distribution. COACHES CLINIC The LFRD and LBPD will be offering two coaching clinics for parents that would like to coach one of the in-house basketball league teams for the 2018-2019 season. Parents will learn the rules of the game, how to conduct a practice, skill development drills, how to reinforce good sportsmanship, will receive sample plays, and get the basics in how to insure the players have fun.
