B EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION: Deadline on October 9 at 4:30 pm NO CLASSES: November 19-25, December 16 - January 3 FOR MORE INFORMATION: Ken Pierini, Program Supervisor, House League Basketball 847.810.3943 - OR - Jason Olson, Program Supervisor, 847.810.3946 The Lake Forest Recreation Department (LFRD) has partnered with Lake Bluff Park District (LBPD) to enhance your basketball experience. Games and practices will be held in both communities. Players will be from both communities. PROGRAM FORMAT Instructional basketball is centered on the concept of learning fundamentals of the game and achieving a feeling of success from participation. Therefore, the basketball season will consist of practice sessions and instructional games dependent upon the number of teams. To better teach the basic fundamentals, the first two sessions will be strictly instructional practices concentrating on the fundamental skills of dribbling, passing, shooting, and basic concepts of offense and defense. Sessions three through eight will introduce boxing out for rebounds, playing man-to-man, defense, setting up a screen, and pick offense. After the pre-season sessions, all players will be evaluated for team assignments. On the third or fourth session, participants will receive their team assignments, their uniform T-shirt, and a schedule of instructional games/practices for the remainder of the season. GOALS OF YOUTH BASKETBALL The purpose of Lake Forest Recreation Department’s Youth Basketball Program is to provide young people with a safe and enjoyable athletic experience with emphasis on sportsmanship and fair play. All participants will be instructed in the fundamental skills of the sport including positioning, rules, and basic strategy. Fundamental playing rules will be taught and enforced at a rate that is suitable to each age level. All players will be assured of playing at least 50% of each game and the opportunity to play every position with regular practice attendance. PRACTICE = PLAY! TEAM FORMATION During the first week of the program, Recreation Department staff and coaches will evaluate all the participants during regular play, drills, and scrimmages. After the first week, staff will conduct a live draft with their coaches. The staff will make sure teams are balanced according to skill level and grade distribution. BASKETBALL PLAYER EVALUATIONS (3RD - 8TH GRADE BOYS & GIRLS) Players will be put through stations and scrimmages and will be evaluated by LFRD & LBPD staff. Times and age break downs will be announced the week prior. The LFRD & LBPD will then make teams for all age levels the week of November 5th. During that week, the different age levels will have optional practices where they can scrimmage against their peers. The scrimmages will be supervised by LFRD & LBPD staff. The kids will break into their teams the week of November 12th.
