DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (PRODUCT DESIGN) What does the course involve? A-Level Design & Technology (Product Design) is an exciting opportunity to continue your studies in Design and Technology. In addition to further improving your skills in designing and making, this Alevel will extend your knowledge of materials and the design process and give you a greater understanding of the role and responsibility of the designer in the real world. AS Unit 1 Materials, Components and Application. (2 hour Written Paper) Unit 2 Learning Through Designing and Making (Coursework Project) A2 Unit 3 Design & Manufacture (2 hour Written Paper) Unit 4 Design and Making Practice (Coursework Project) What qualifications do I need? This course is suitable for students who have achieved a grade ‘C’ or above in a Design and Technology based subject. Equipment Students will need a set of good quality drawing pencils, fineliner pens, coloured pencils etc. Other equipment will be provided but students may wish to purchase their own rendering materials to enable them to produce high quality design work both at school and at home. Assessment The course is assessed as outlined above. The coursework projects in both AS and A2 are internally assessed and externally moderated by AQA. The written examinations are externally assessed. Units 1 and 2 account for 50% each of the AS qualification and 25% of the A2. Units 1, 2, 3 and 4 together account for 25% each of the A2. General Comments A-level Product Design is an enjoyable but demanding course and students need to be highly motivated to maintain project deadlines and make regular and rapid progress with coursework projects. Future Prospects A level Product Design is an excellent choice for any student wishing to pursue a 3-D design related course at university including Architecture, Industrial or Product Design, Automotive Design, Furniture Design and a variety of Engineering and Manufacturing courses.
