THE BULLETIN Vol 23 Issue 23 Monday, June 4, 2018 2013 Onoway & District Chamber of Commerce Business Of The Year Dual Credit Program A Success For Students OJSH participates in a dual credit program offered by Norquest College in co-operation with NGPS. The Health Care Aide program continues to be a very popular option for many students in Northern Gateway. The program enables students to train in the medical field before leaving high school and, in the process, earn 25 credits. When students graduate, they will have achieved their high school diploma and, in addition, their Health Care Aide certificate from Norquest Col- lege. This certificate will allow graduates to be em- ployed in many front line health care positions such as in assisted living facilities, continuing care insti- tutions, acute care hospitals, group homes, home care or private care opportunities. Students of partnered high schools are taught by a Nurse Instructor, often through videoconferencing. The program consists of: • 200 of theory in class, • 85 hours of lab, and • 200 hours of clinical. Clinical time (practicum) is broken into one week halfway through the program and four weeks in July, full-time Monday to Friday. The program typ- ically starts in September and completes at the end of July for a total of 11 months. On May 24th, three OJSH Grade 12 students attended Norquest College Convocation to receive their Health Care Aide accreditation. Cassidy Kostiuk, Richelle van Ramshorst, and Jocelyn Arndt received their certificates in a ceremony held at the Winspear Centre in Edmonton.
