global health Zambia Commissions New Molecular Biology Lab for EID, Viral Load Testing by Clement Phiri, technical advisor, laboratory programs, Global Health and Sadaf Chaudhury, manager, Global Health In March 2018, APHL continued its support for the UN’s 90/90/90 goal for HIV/AIDS by helping to open a new laboratory for emerging infectious disease (EID) and viral load testing in the Eastern Province of Zambia. With representatives from the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Zambian Ministry of Health Services, APHL welcomed Minister of Health Services-Permanent Secretary Dr. Jabbin Mulwanda and US Ambassador Daniel Foote to the commissioning of the Levy Mwanawasa University Molecular Biology Laboratory at the University Teaching Hospital (LM-UTH). Thanks to APHL and partners, the laboratory has been equipped with state- of-the-art instrumentation and systems. These include the COBAS ® AmpliPrep- COBAS ® TaqMan ® 96 Analyzer, which provides greater flexibility, increased efficiency and enhanced data integrity for faster, higher quality test results, and the Disa*Lab laboratory information system (LIS) for viral load and EID testing. APHL trained staff in the use of the new instrumentation and LIS to ensure that these resources are fully utilized. n Dr. Jabbin Mulwanda and Ambassador Daniel Foote open the new Levy Mwanawasa University Molecular Biology Laboratory Improve testing quality in your lab with CLSI’s GP49 Developing and Managing a Medical Laboratory (Test) Utilization Program, First Edition | GP49 Improve patient care outcomes and reduce costs in your lab with CLSI’s GP49. 1st Edition GP49 Developing and Managing a Medical Laboratory (Test) Utilization Management Program • Includes an extensive list of strategies and tactics for developing and managing a program • Features in-depth review of program performance metrics and analytics • Appendixes include useful templates and worksheets This report provides guidance for initiating, developing, and maintaining an effective test utilization program.
