Additional testing performed by MDH Public Health Laboratory
• Blood metals ( three analytes ). This method for cadmium , lead and mercury testing has been used in four studies for a total of approximately 2000 specimens .
• Mercuryindriedbloodspots ( oneanalyte ). Developed for the pilot project , Mercury in Newborns in the Lake Superior Basin ( 1465 specimens ), this method has been applied to two other studies ( an additional 648 specimens ).
• Toxic elements in urine ( 15 analytes ). Used for MDH ’ s emergency response program , and used to measure arsenic in 65 urine specimens .
• Speciated arsenic in urine ( five species ). Developed to characterize arsenic speciation in 15 urine samples to determine dietary or non-dietary sourcing .
• Mercury in urine ( one analyte ). Being used to measure mercury in urine samples to determine the inorganic mercury exposure in a population of 600 pregnant women .
• Environmental phenols in urine ( six analytes ). Two methods have been used to measure triclosan , bisphenol A , and parabens in urine samples in two studies ( 533 samples ).
• Fatty acids in plasma ( 18 analytes ). Validated for two studies where mercury was also measured , the goal was to relate both fatty acids and mercury to fish consumption . 1139 biospecimens have been measured .
• Hydroxypyrene in urine ( one analyte ). A method for hydroxypyrene in urine was validated as a marker of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon ( PAH ) exposure for a community near a PAH superfund site . 442 biospecimens were measured .
