Club Newsletters Club Newsletters AMERICAN CLUB SOUTHWEST ITALIAN CHRISTMAS PARTY SLATED FOR SOLON COMMUNITY CENTER, DECEMBER 1st The Annual Solon Italian Club Christmas Party will be held at the Solon Community Center on Sunday, December 1st from 3-6 pm. Children and Grandchildren of members who are current with dues are invited to attend and participate. Gifts, torrone and oranges will be presented by Santa to children, 10 and under. A special visit is planned again by La Befana. "This has become a treasured Club tradition," says event chairman Al Giammaria. "We strive to preserve our Italian heritage and believe the legend of La Befana is an excellent one to share with our young people," says Giammaria. The Club will also collect food, toiletries, personal care products and recreational goods to send to our troops overseas. Among other things, the soldiers request: toothpaste, toothbrushes, socks, deodorant, dental floss, cotton balls, disposable hand and feet warmers, toilet paper, razors, hair gel, shampoo, soap, chap stick, wet wipes, foil packets of chicken, dried fruit, energy bars, snack cakes, hot chocolate, candy, beef jerky, playing cards, batteries, puzzle books, and blank greeting cards (to send notes back home). The children attending the Christmas Party will, again, write letters and create hand-made cards to send with the packages to the troops. Members of the Italian Club of Solon High School will be on hand at this year’s event to help. CLUB AWARD & SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION REMINDER Any Solon Italian Club member that has been in good standing for 5 years and has a son or daughter that will be graduating high school in 2012, you will need to send written correspondence to Bill Russo no later than December 31, 2013 identifying the child's name and school they are graduating from. This will make your child eligible for a $750 Club Award. Please note that if the deadline is missed the child can still apply for the Solon Italian Club Scholarship. 2014 Scholarship Applications are now online on the Scholarship Page of our Club website. While a child may be eligible for both an Award and Scholarship, they will only be able to receive one or the other, not both, based on whether they meet the requirements established by the Scholarship Committee. CLUB TO RING THE BELL FOR SALVATION ARMY The Solon Italian Club has, once again, committed to the Salvation Army to provide 'bell ringers' for their annual collection in front of Giant Eagle in Solon on Saturday, December 7. ADULT CHRISTMAS PARTY SET FOR DECEMBER 13 Tickets are now available for the Solon Italian Club Adult Christmas party. The event will be held at Nido Italia on Friday evening, December 13. December 2013 Newsletter Visit us on our new Facebook page at Southwest Italian American Club "Sundae Sunday with Santa" Sunday, December 15, 2013 from 2:00PM until 5:00PM will be our Club’s annual Children’s Christmas Party. The event will take place at Elmwood Recreation Center in Elmwood Park, Independence, Ohio. All members, member’s children, grand children, and great grandchildren are invited. Only children from age infant to 10 years old will receive a gift from Santa. Upon arriving, a professional photographer will take a keepsake photo of each child individually or in a group with Santa and will be mailed to you. Sparkles the Clown will be there also entertaining the children with face painting, magic and her animal show. Sundae Sunday with Santa will be an old fashioned “ice cream bar” with everyone making their own masterpiece whether it’s a cone, bowl or sundae. There will be several kinds of toppings, sprinkles, whipping cream and of course cherries for the top. Cake, coffee, chocolate and white milk will also be served. "New Officers Elected for 2014" At the November 5, 2013 monthly meeting, in accordance with the bylaws, the new officers were elected by the membership to serve for the year 2014. President: George Mastrobuono, Vice President: Anthony Capretta, Treasurer: Ken Ramser, Secretary: Bob Grace and Building Operations Manager: Dave Buccieri. Also two (2) new Trustees were elected: Tony Marlette and Armand Rossi. Thank you to the Officers and Trustees who served the Club in 2013. Your service was very much appreciated.   December 2013 Newsletter "November Meeting Speaker" At the November 5, 2013 monthly our guest speaker was Scott H. Longert, author of the book “The Best They Could Be” a historical review of the Cleveland Indians and how they became the Kings of baseball from 1916 thru 1920 and covers the players as World War I loomed as well as details on how baseball was evolving. The book was published by Potomac Books, Inc. Mr. Longert had books for sale and autographed every copy sold. It was a very informative evening and hopefully the Indians can make that World Series Championship dream come true again this coming year.
