Sicily: Art and Invention Between Greece and Rome
Cleveland Museum of Art, The Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation Hall
This magnificent exhibition presents masterpieces of art from ancient Sicily, an island crossroads that forged a distinctive Hellenic identity. Occupying a pivotal position in Mediterranean history, former Greek colonies such as Syracuse, Gela, Akragas, and Selinos emerged as wealthy city-states, where innovation and experimentation flourished. It celebrates
Sicilian culture of the fifth to third centuries B.C., when its art, architecture, theater, poetry, philosophy and science left an original and enduring stamp on both mainland Greece and
Rome. Over 150 objects bear witness to the military and athletic victories, religious and civic rituals, opulent lifestyles and intellectual attainments that shaped the western Greek world.
Sicily: Art and Invention Between Greece and Rome has been co-organized by the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Cleveland Museum of Art, in association with the Assessorato dei
Beni Culturali e dell'Identità Siciliana. It celebrates 2013 as the Year of Italian Culture in the United States, an initiative of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, realized under the
leadership of the President of the Republic of Italy.
The “Mediterranean is a sea of
death, and that must stop,” said
Italian Prime Minister Enrico
Letta. In a meeting in Malta with
leaders of the European Union,
Letta said more than 400 migrants
drowned recently off Italian and
Maltese shores while trying to
reach Europe. The bloc leaders
promised action and ordered
a task force to recommend proposals this month to convert the
sea into one of “life and trade.”

a train ride into Switzerland for
an elderly German citizen, has
resulted in a gigantic recovery
of a hoard of modern art in the
man’s apartment in Munich. He
was detained during a routine
tax and customs inspection.

This exhibition is comprised of 30 framed photographs by Pino Guidolotti depicting Palladio’s projects for private residences in the Brenta Valley and areas surrounding Vicenza. Each
picture is accompanied by a descriptive panel of the villa. Widely considered the most influential figure in the history of Western architecture, Andrea Palladio’s influence was so prominent and the quality of his work so outstanding that a number of his buildings are protected as part of the World Heritage Site.

Picasso and Matisse and a 16th
century engraving of the Crucifixion, by Albrecht Duerer. They
were in very good condition,
and some had been stolen from
German museums. No charges
have been filed in the case.
------------------------Newly discovered in Milan is a
series of daVinci’s sketches hidden
behind layers of whitewash inside
the Sforza Castle.
Restorers
uncovered a canopy of green
mulberry trees, dotted with
fruits tied together by a golden
rope. They peeled away up to 17
layers before uncovering the masterpiece.
daVinci was commissioned by Ludovico Maria Sforza
to paint the mural in 1498. He
was the duke of Milan. Assistants also worked on the sketches
which were uncovered in a
corner of the room (Sala delle
Asse). Centuries later the room
was used as a stable for Austrian
horses. The restorers plan to
uncover all of da Vinci’s sketches
in time for Milan’s Expo in 2015.

Like the Energizer bunny, Michael Lacivita of Youngstown
keeps on going…and keeps on winning. Nine years and
still counting, Lacivita has entered and won first prize in
the vegetable oddities division. Not bad for an 89 year-old
‘youngster’ who has groomed his grandson, Jeff Vicarel to seed
pepper plants and compete. Together they’ve grown six- foot
plus plants bearing honey sweet orange peppers. Lacivita
shares the credit with his black and yellow bumblebee who
each spring visits and pollinates. Lacivita and grandson
Jeff also share the glory with Mother Nature – who helps
to produce the brilliant bright yellow and orange peppers.
