He was only 21 years old and couldn't speak any English, but he had a dream to make a better life for himself. He started working with his uncle in construction the day after he arrived and worked until 1987. He married Theresa in 1962 and they had two daughters, Annette (married to Bill Spetrino) and Marie (married to Paul Haffenden). They have three grandchildren, Ryan, Heather and Stephanie. Tony joined the Baranello Lodge shortly after arriving from Italy and has held several officer positions, including President and Trustee. As President many years ago, he began the tradition of the Annual Communion Breakfast. He is still an active member and supports both the Baranello Lodge and the Baranello Women's Junior Auxiliary (BWJA) in any way that he can. He returned to visit Baranello for the fourth time this past summer for a family wedding and was able to visit with his 87-year-old sister Lina and her family. Sadly, Lina passed away in Baranello on November 12th of this year. Condolences to Tony,Theresa and family from the Baranello Lodge and the BWJA. As much as he loves Baranello, he is so happy that he lives in the United States. God bless you, Tony! - submitted by Tony Nero’s daughter, Annette Spetrino COLUMBUS DAY PARADE On Monday October 14th, Baranello Lodge members jointed with numerous other clubs, bands, schools and civic groups in celebrating Columbus Day in the heart of “Little Italy.” The parade started to roll around noon, after the 10:00 a.m. mass at Holy Rosary. Eight members of our Lodge (pictured) proudly marched in the parade carrying the Italian flag and a banner saluting Columbus for his achievements and commemorating the Italian culture. Hundreds of people watched as a long procession of marching bands, floats and Italian club members winded down the streets of Little Italy from Murry Hill and Cornel, ending in front of the grandstand situated on the steps of Holy Rosary Church. The annual parade is sponsored by the Order of Italian Sons and DaughFrom left: Joe Giovinale, Berardino Discenza, Jerry Nicastro, ters of America, and the Baranello Lodge was proud to again participate in this Italian event of major significance. Held on October 26, 2013, it was a fun and memorable night for children and adults alike. With food always a highlight of any function at the Baranello Lodge, everyone enjoyed a homemade Italian dinner of pasta, meatballs, chicken and sausage. The fabulous Jim Rio of Music Connections provided the entertainment of music and games for the kids. As part of the evening’s festivities, the Brecksville Broadview Heights High School Art Club painted ghosts and pumpkins on kids' faces. And, each child attended the craft station and decorated his or her own pumpkin to take home — a wonderful remembrance of a fun, Halloween-themed evening.
