There are many ways to tell the Italian American history,
and Gerardo found a unique novel in his book,” Phila-Italy
Americana, Italian Themes on United States Postage Stamps.”
Having collected stamps over many years, he discovered that
there are many U.S. stamps that have a clear Italian theme
and many others whose connection to Italy is not so apparent.
I think that Phila-Italy Americana is a book for any Italian
American interested in learning about his/her heritage and
for all those who appreciate Italian culture in general. The
book is an easy read and lends itself to initiate conversation as
each stamp presents an encapsulated view of our rich history.
These stamps tell stories of significant events that led to the
discovery and progress of our nation; they feature historical
figures, some of whom have never been to the United States
and fewer knew of its existence. The book also profiles a vast
array of art and cultural items that have become part of the U.S .
national treasure. Many Italians have crossed the Atlantic Ocean
during the last few centuries to come to the U.S. The many
interesting details gleaned from these stamps reflect Gerardo’s
genuine interest in sharing with pride the contributions and
legacy of these immigrants with the modern country. Their
sacrifices, coupled with many Americans who admire Italian
art, culture, music and language, i.e., their contributions, have
made Italians the fifth largest ethnic group in the United States.
We modern Italians are the beneficiaries of those
who struggled to establish a foothold in this country. The
story draws us closer as Italian Americans, because
it belongs to all of us. It swells our pride in our heritage
and appreciation for this great country where we live.
Gerardo Perrotta’s book symbolically embodies the pride
of those who helped build and shape the United States of
America, sometimes sacrificing their lives for a better future. So
if you are an Italian American, you will particularly enjoy this
publication. I also believe that the book could be an affordable,
meaningful gift for a relative or friend during the upcoming
holidays, and something to preserve for the generations to come.

Bread Success!
Paul Sciria
Managing Editor
Sixty year-old Sam Covelli can often be seen tooling
around town in a luxurious Maserati he had shipped in
from a classic Italian company. This highly successful,
Warren, Ohio entrepreneur is the franchise owner of
250 U. S. Panera stores in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West
(A classic artist who paints on the canvas of music)
Tony Marotta,
the customer right and offering a spacious, comfortable and clean restaurant setting. His marketing
program allows customers to eat healthy and count calories at the same time. Covelli visits at least one of
his restaurants every day to maintain quality control.
The newest property in Mayfield Heights
offers delicious Italian pasta meals including Fettuccini and Rotini. Looking for a beverage to top
off the meal? Panera offers a ‘tazza’ (cup) of espresso
and a choice of multiple pastry and biscuits.
The Covelli Enterprises management also owns
five O’Charleys restaurants in northeast Ohio and
Erie, Pennsylvania and nine Dairy Queen restaurants.
Covelli Enterprises strongly believes in giving back
to the community. They’ve donated millions of dollars
to local food banks and hunger relief agencies. Millions of fresh bakery items have also been donated.

Virginia, Kentucky and Florida with another four in
Canada. According to company projections, Covelli
Enterprises may exceed $500 million in sales. It all
began when Covelli, a veteran restaurant franchisee,
sold his 60+ McDonald’s properties in favor of filling
a vacant niche in the fast food market. His vision
of a chain offering healthier menu options has given
rise to the nation’s sixth largest restaurant franchise.
Across five states and north of the border into
Toronto, Covelli Enterprises employs 30,000 people in
the U.S. and Canada. A typical recent Panera grand
opening in Mayfield Heights,
Ohio created 55 jobs. In the
Cleveland-Akron chain there are
currently 47 in the Panera bakerycafé Cleveland-Akron chain with

Searching for an answer to
success for Panera and Covelli? It’s
certainly not a result of “loafing.”
