Sghira is a preserved village with a small medina which
hasn’t lost its charm. Visiting the Hara means losing
yourself in the streets, meet and talk with local people,
discover the houchs renovated in the strict traditional
architecture of the island. A halt at the Dhyget shop is a
must, not to mention breakfast around the pool of the
small charming hotel Dar Dhiafa.
Houmt El Souk
The island and its inhabitants have managed to preserve
the traditions and culture we find in handicrafts,
costumes and music. Houmt El Souk, the main town,
has a population of 40 000 and as its name implies, is a
trade and exchange center above all. The quite dense
urban fabric of the island prefers the houch to the typical

Menzel. The houch consists of built structures laid out
around a courtyard. It is equally used for habitations and
foudouks (warehouses and businesses).
Under the shade of the souk’s arcades, you can
order custom pieces from some artisans at your
leisure. After buying wool by the kilo at 15 Hedi
Chaker Place, we order from Mahmoud Arouay a
wool blanket, achieved in 48 hours. Hats and
traditional djerbian fabrics are revisited in Ypatoum,
a workshop which also turns the foutah (finaly
woven cotton piece) into modern clothes.
Houmt El Souk is renowned for its jewellers, gathered
in the town’s black souk. Jewellery is one of the most
ancient artisanal treasures of the city : gold and silver
have been transformed for generations into shapes
