its districts, its souks, its cuisine and a bit more of beach as
well. Off-season bathing before leaving for the great desert
or simply enjoy the island.

For the anecdote, Djerba is the largest island of the
North African coast and is located at the extreme
south-east of Tunisia, on the edge of the Gulf of
Gabès. The legend tells about Ulysses brief stay on
the island and the history testifies to numerous stops.

The Carthaginians founded many trading posts,
Romans built cities and developped agriculture.
Then came successively the Vandal, Byzantine and
Arabic dominations.
The island is home to one of the country’s oldest
Jewish communities, which has apparently sought
refuge in Djerba after the destruction of Solomon’s
Temple. This community is partly installed in the Hara
Sghira where the very famous synagogue El Ghriba
was erected and attracts many pilgrims every year.
