Andaz
40 Liverpool Street, London.
www.andaz.hyatt.com
Andaz, the new brand of the
group Hyatt, invents casual
luxury : a nook where art and
design come together with
welcome customized service.
At first sight the Victorian
architecture of Andaz is very
imposing; dating from 1884,
Andaz sets the stage for many
styles which in the image of
the 5 restaurants and 4 bars,
can be noted for their diversity.
Art and design live together
without ostentation ; the works
of art fit the spaces tastefully
and often unexpectedly. Andaz
fits into the quarter like a living
platform : floral arrangements
in the nearby shop, works
of art selected by the East
End collective Exhibit-K and
beauty products created by a
neighborhood perfume shop.
The Connaught
Carlos Place, Mayfair.
www.the-connaught.co.uk
The Connaught is a highly
elegant hotel. Historical
address, it could rely on its
affiliation to the royal family
to stand out. It is just the
opposite ! After a 70 million
pounds restoration, conducted
by Guy Olivier in the most
proper way, the legendary
hotel lives to the rhythm of
its contemporary restaurants
orchestrated by India Mahdavi
and Hélène Darroze and its
cocktail bar designed by David
Collins which serves “haute
couture” cocktails. Equipped
with new rooms and elegant
small lofts, the Connaught also
unveils its “Apartment” : top
floor decorated by David Collins,
white marble fireplace, works of
art created in situ and two treelined terraces offer a fantastic
view of the roofs of Mayfair…
The hotel of the moment.

Nuno Mendes, Portuguese
chef in London, is on firstname terms with the highest
summits. Delicacy, simplicity
and creativity rule on its new
restaurant : perfectionist
and in touch with nature, he
innovates a lot, like with those
langoustines served on a squid
ink reduction and watermelon.

Véritable prêtresse de la mode
True priestess of London’s
fashion industry, Maureen
Doherty is well-known for
introducing the brand Issey
Miyake in Europe. Now
owning her own boutique in
Knightsbridge, she creates and
collects beautiful and noble
objects : ceramic bowls, silver
pins, hand knitted cashmere
capes and Indian cotton works.
A delight for the eyes and touch.
think we are finally able to focus on the purchase of
a sublime pair of red leather boots… Not at all ! The
brand has been transformed into a pop-up store
called « The House Of Voltaire » in order to support
the artistic association of the same name which
offers to young artists, since 1994, about 40 studios
on Voltaire Road, in Clapham. Refusing to market
their work through galleries or commercial premises,
the artists sold it in « The House of Voltaire », right
before Christmas, to the richest customers in
Mayfair. The booty was substantial and the support,
generous : we had never seen in living memory so
many women tearing each other’s hair out to acquire

paintings, objects and sculptures ! « London is a true
platform, which allows all sorts of chance encounters
or programmed meetings. Public art surprises
thousands of residents and visitors every day ; it is
the specific artistic feature of the capital. London
also allows shortcuts and promotes juxtapositions,
between squats and new dwellings, big money and
stammering artist. In London, nothing is ever really
compartmentalized. I
