Je ne suis pas reporter, je ne suis pas rapide,
J’ai besoin de temps pour appuyer sur le déclencheur
de mon appareil.
Sfax est une ville pour moi.
C’est avec erreur et par conviction
Que je me suis lancé dans des images abstraites et
graphiques,
Que je me suis laissé emporté à faire des images qui
demandaient un matériel lourd.
Cela m’a empêché d’entendre, d’écouter et surtout de voir.
Mes premiers jours à Sfax ont été difficiles.
Ici, les habitants prennent le temps de vous connaître.
Ils prennent le temps de vous parler, de présenter leur
famille, de vous accompagner quand vous êtes perdu
dans des ruelles. Ils prennent le temps d’offrir un café
ou un thé.
On prend le temps mais ce n’est pas une ville endormie.
C’est une ville vivante où s’imaginent mille commerces.
La Médina de Sfax est une communauté sociale : voilà
le sentiment qu’il faut avoir à l’esprit.
Après cette réflexion, lors de ma dernière matinée à Sfax,
J’ai abandonné sac et pied photo à l’hôtel pour ne
garder que le minimum.
Ce n’est qu’à ce moment que j’ai pu enfin photographier
la Medina de Sfax.

I am not a reporter and I am not quick,
I need time to push the trigger of my camera.
Sfax is a city for me.
It is by error and by conviction
That I set myself to abstract and graphic images
That I let myself be carried to do images that required
a heavy material
That impeded me to hear, to listen and, foremost, to see.
My first days in Sfax were difficult.
Here, the inhabitants take the time to know you.
They take the time to talk to you, to introduce their
families, to accompany you when you’re lost in the narrow
streets. They take time to offer you a coffee or a cup of tea.
They take the time but it is not a sleepy city.
It is a lively city where a thousand businesses are
imagined.
The Medina of Sfax is a social community : this is the
sentiment that must be in mind,
After this reflexion, on my last morning in Sfax,
I left backpack and tripod at the hotel and only took
the minimum.
It is only then that I could finally photograph the
Medina of Sfax.

Maghreb worked on “Le Projet
Sfax”, the First Euro–Maghreb
Residence of Photographers
organized by the Delegation of
the European Union to Tunisia.
This initiative is a concrete result of the work led by
the European Union (EU) to promote closer ties
between the people living on the shores of the
Mediterranean basin, in the framework of the EuroMediterranean partnership.
“Le Projet Sfax” was born from the will to support the
application of the Medina of Sfax to be recognised
as a UNESCO’s World Heritage Site and to increase
public awareness on the cultural heritage and
traditions of Sfax, inherited from the numerous
civilisations that settled in this city through times
and which reflect Mediterranean history and the link
between the East, Africa and the West.
Today, it is a privilege and a chance to walk under the
ramparts and wander through the narrow alleys of
the Medina, an architectural example of traditional
Arab-Muslim town-planning that has remained
intact since its construction in the 9th century.
Visiting the traditional houses, which have withstood
time and have been reorganised to the needs of
each period, despite adverse climatic conditions and
the hazards of history, we can only question
ourselves on how best to protect this heritage.

.و هيّأت نفيس اللتقاط الصور التي تتطلب معدات ثقيـــلة
.و هذا ما منعني من االستامع و اإلصغاء وإمعان الرؤية
.أيامي األوىل يف صفاقس كانت صعبة
.هنــا، تأخذ الناس الوقت للتعرف عليك
إنها تأخذ الوقت للتحدث معك و لتقديم أرسها أو ملرافقتك
حني تكون تائها يف األزقة. و تأخذ الوقت كذلك لدعوتك
.عىل فنجان قهــوة أو شــاي
.الكل يأخذ وقته لكن املدينة ال تغرق يف سباتها
.إنها مدينة حية ترنو إىل إقامة آالف املحالت التجارية
املدينة العتيقة صفاقس هي عبارة عىل مجموعة تنتمي
إىل بنية اجتامعية متينة و متكاملة : هذا هو الشعور الذي
