Knowledge is the key!
By Gal Abahel
We all know dancers’ lives are very busy: Taking
classes, taking even more classes, hours of
practicing, working more than three jobs and still
needing to do more to push you forward.
Every dancer is essentially a freelancer and his
work tool is his body. You as a dancer need to
take responsibility for every move and weave your
schedule the right way to benefit your
precious time. One thing that we do not give the
proper amount of priority and time is…
marketing.
Case-in-point: Artists need to market their work.
IS MARKETING PART OF YOUR DAY, WEEK, OR
MONTH?
You’re probably asking yourself, Why would I need
to market myself, I’m not a business?
WRONG! YES, you are! You’re a professional
dancer and you need to properly manage your
way to success. It is a common misconception
amongst many artisans, regardless of their
particular craft, that their artwork will be good
enough to sell itself in the long-run. Such a
scenario is rarely the case.
Some of you may be in school, part of a company,
or taking classes for fun— it doesn’t really matter
where you are in the process or what stage you are
at. You had better start working on your marketing
plan, and soon.
Marketing is a never-ending practice and you’ll
need to give it the same time and
consistency you give your dancing. The more you
work at it and put thought into it, the better you
will become; it will be naturally part of your day,
and yes, even fun. You want to expose your work,
put your images out there, tell your story, and build
your group of followers who will support you.
When you build groups of followers on social
media you are promoting yourself, selling your
work (shows/tickets), constructing a future career
(no matter what it will be, people will already
know you), and also helping to market the
company or company colleagues you dance with.
By sharing your story, images, or work, you encourage young dancers to get better. We are all
looking for a role-model to learn from.
If you really have a creative way of marketing,
doors and windows will open up for you and in
the end you may even find yourself with more
contracts to sign.
Use Social media you like and are comfortable
with;
if you can do more than one, good for you!
Anytime you get a chance or a stage to promote
your career, to support your company, your
team, or company members, take it! Share.
ALWAYS THINK AS A PROFESSIONAL.
