A short walk from the Duomo, the Sant’Ambrogio neighbourhood is already well worth a visit. Locals flock here to buy their groceries, however you can also peruse through the displays of clothing, furniture and many other temptations. Sant’Ambrogio is not as well known amongst tourists as il mercato centrale, so it is perfect for a more casual meander (and a shameless people watching session!).

Being a Roman resident myself I can assure you that this one is quite an experience. These days, prices in the market have risen as it has become more and more of a tourist attraction. However, it still sells all you could wish for, specialising in fun pasta shapes and an array of truffle flavoured condiments (a luxury not to be missed in my opinion!) Open from early morning to early afternoon, so arrive early so as not to miss out. You can also find clothes, souvenirs, accessories and – if you are too overwhelmed –plenty of restaurants in the surrounding area to head to instead. Also, a little local tip for anyone so inclined – come sunset, this area becomes the centre of Roman nightlife.
