LA CIVETTA April 2019 | Page 7

FROM THE EDITORS

Dear readers,

Who would have thought that by the 15th issue of La Civetta the hard work of our team would have achieved so much? We have recently been shortlisted by the Student Publication Association for an award as result of 14 issues of exciting creativity and quality content. So, we would like to thank all our writers and designers, especially our head of design Catherine Simpson for creating such a high-quality product.

Issue 15 considers Italy’s role in the European Union as one of the founding six nations with a radical populist and anti-European in power. We have seen Italy wrangling away from Franco-European influence and even turning to China as an economic ally with its recent agreement to investment in the Chinese Road & Belt Scheme. On the other hand, this tension has acted against European infrastructure projects like the

Turin-Lyon high-speed railway.

This issue also celebrates a wealth of Italian art in the UK. Bristol museum is one of the 13 hosts to the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death and we have enjoyed

interviewing one of the curators in this modern exhibition. Beyond Bristol,

we have interviews and reviews on a variety of the

National Gallery’s Italian Renaissance projects.

Finally, as the holidays approach and the year abroad creeps up upon unsuspecting second year students, our travel and food sections offer numerous

travel tips, holiday ideas and recipes.

Whilst this may be an era of political tension between Italy and Europe,

with fears of economic depression looming over the country, its cultural

identity and legacy are clearly stronger than ever. This issue should remind

readers of Italy’s cultural achievements and radical creativity

that is omnipresent in its culture today.
