Matthias Wivel

A talk on curation

La Civetta had the pleasure of hosting a talk by internationally-renowned curator Matthias Wivel, who discussed the meticulous care and complex processes required to plan and successfully put on a large-scale exhibition. Using the 2017 show Michelangelo and Sebastiano - which took two and a half years to curate - as his key example, Wivel was passionate in passing his knowledge onto the students, informing us about

the ins and outs of curation in the National Gallery.

Sainsbury wing. Wivel worked with his colleagues to create a pertinent exhibition that not only overcame logistical issues, but also immersed the public in the bond between two major artists of the High Renaissance. For example, the exhibition’s partner Credit Suisse commissioned an impressive reconstruction of the Borgherini Chapel by Madrid-based 3D specialists Factum Arte. Viewers could experience an almost true-to-size replica of such a celebrated altarpiece, even in an event space with fixed walls and varied ceiling lengths.
