Italy’s radical new populist government has left Europe feeling the shock waves as Franco-Italian tension rises in an increasingly unstable era. Our Editor Will Holmes looks at the current situation in Italy and how it will affect its European neighbours.

Either the Second Republic or Europe will be dead by 2022. This is very much the atmosphere of despair in Italian politics as it is dogged by scandal and corruption. It has left parties with a desperate desire for renewal. There are two problems that no Italian politician seems to be able to solve: how to reduce public debt and how to create political unity and identity. Is Italy capable of solving these issues?
