(n:gage): Organizations have been grappling with the challenge of
attracting (and retaining) top talent for ever. In fact in the book
‘Hiring for Attitude’, author Mark Murphy says “89 percent of
those who fail [new hires] will stumble as a result of attitudinal
factors such as a lack of coachability, emotional intelligence,
motivation and temperament.” Now there is talk about renewed
focus by some companies on breaking the cycle of attrition by
‘hiring right’ instead of just necessarily top performers.
As head of strategic hiring, do you see this as a trend in the Indian
Technology sector? What would be your priorities when selecting
talent for Wipro Technologies?
Indraneil Roy (IR): Hiring in the Indian Technology sector has undergone
many an inflexion point starting from the mid eighties when the industry
was in its infancy and focused primarily in products, to now becoming a
global hub for Services employing millions in its workforce. There is however
one common underlying fact which has hardly changed.
