upbringing. He was the first editor in
chief of the Sierra Leone Daily Mail
newspaper and one of the founding
members of the Sierra Leone Journalist Association.
Her father always spoke his mind,
even when he got into trouble. After
writing a newspaper article against
then President Siaka Stevens, he was
forced to flee Sierra Leone with his
family. The most important lesson
Carol has learned in life is to never
give up on what you believe. “To
thine own self be true” she voices.
“It’s so hard to maintain who you are
and what you believe in especially
when it’s not popular.”
Each day that passes yields a new opportunity. Carol is in the midst of advocating for the establishment of the
United Way of Sierra Leone (UWSL).
UWSL will join hundreds of United
Ways around the world in promoting
education, income, and health. The Sierra Leone division will be one of a few on the continent of Africa to focus on early childhood academics and educational leadership.
Today she ponders on what direction to take her work in. She toys with many new ideas in
search of reflection and guidance to help make her next decision. Her one wish for Sierra
Leone is for children to have access to a 21st century standard when it comes to their education. On a lighter note Carol says she “loves, loves and loves to dance.” Kushe’ inquired
about her favorite Sierra Leonean dish and she responded “cassava leaf”. We know exactly
how she feels.
