YOUNG CHILDREN ARE ENGINEERS: EXPLORING SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY,
ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS (STEM)
Presented by Dr Kate Highfield and Laure Hislop
As we observe children in play we know they are natural problem-solvers and creative
thinkers. Our goal as teachers is to recognise these learning opportunities and extend and
enable learning. However, when we consider young children’s learning in STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) sometimes this can be challenging.
This hands-on day will explore each of the content areas in STEM, looking at how we can
facilitate deep learning for 3-5 year old’s. The session will explore the pillars of STEM (science,
technology, engineering and mathematics) and then focus on STEM processes for learning.
Come prepared for some hands-on fun as you become a play-based STEM expert!

LIGHTS CAMERA ACTION
Presented by Laure Hislop, KU Children’s Services
Educators are now using video as well as digital photography as a way of documenting
learning and making visible the learning that is occurring in an early childhood environment.
This practical two-part workshop will help to de-mystify media and take story telling to a
new level. The focus of the sessions will be on creating rather than consuming media, and
exploring how video can be used as a tool for inquiry based learning.
Participants will explore:
Green Screen video making – understand this technique, the tools used to create
videos using a green screen and how it affords educators the opportunity to enhance
video making. We will also discuss and explore how to use it to promote further
learning.
Stop motion animation – this technique will be explored as a way of allowing children
to create their own animations. Using modelling materials, participants will explore and
create their own stories and animations and learn how to develop them from initial
ideas, to creating characters and designing and recording a story.
Part 1: Tuesday 31

Part 2: Thursday

Workshop participants will have the opportunity to use the resources within their centres, or
be given ideas for creating opportunities for green screening at a centre level.
During the second workshop we will investigate how participants have used their new film-
making skills to revisit learning and ‘make it better’.
This workshop is suitable for early childhood professionals working with children 3 – 5 years.
Completing Lights Camera Action will contribute 2 hours of NESA registered PD addressing
