ANNUAL REPORT 2018 AC H I EVI NG EXC E LLE NC E The makings of an ‘Excellent’ centre KU 20 18 “An Excellent rating recognises providers who are champions of quality improvement, innovative leaders beyond the service, and are raising the bar on quality education and care for Australian children.” Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) At KU when we talk about the organisation’s goal to ‘Achieve Excellence’ we believe that should apply to everything we do, however of particular importance is the quality of our services and the educational programs we provide for children. KU centres have always had an exemplary quality record, with 99% of centres independently assessed as meeting or exceeding the National Quality Standard (NQS), compared with a sector benchmark of 78% in 2018. However even within KU, achieving the rare and coveted ‘Excellent’ NQS rating is a very tall order, with only the top 0.3% of services nationally currently holding the honour. KU Lance is KU’s oldest operating service having first opened in 1900, and has been an integral part of the local Millers Point community in Sydney for almost 120 years. In 2018, 8 the centre’s outstanding commitment to quality was recognised when it joined KU’s growing list of Excellent rated centres. Within their program, Director Donna Morley and her team actively incorporate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures within their curriculum. With the CBD, Observatory Hill, the historic Rocks area and Barangaroo at their doorstep, excursions within the local community to develop a greater understanding of the significance of those sites, forms a vital part of their program. “We pride ourselves on the strong connections we have with the local community,” explains Donna. “We are regularly visited by Aboriginal Elders who share their knowledge, culture, art and language with the children. We have also developed a close relationship with our neighbour,
